The alphabet

I think I will start by writing about the very beginning of my reading journey.  My mom says she read to me as a small child, but I do not have any memory of that.  My very first memory is in kindergarten (half day back in the 1960’s!) and singing the alphabet song.  I never really thought about it making any sense.  I suppose so much of the world doesn’t make sense to a five-year-old that one more nonsense song really didn’t make me question it.  However, on this particular day, the class was sitting on a rug in a kind of half circle singing the alphabet song while our teacher pointed at each letter that was taped to the wall above a chalk board with one of those long wooden rods with a rubber tip. It was a true “light-bulb” moment for me!  “Oh! Those things go together!”  It must have been an important moment as it is one of the few memories I still retain from kindergarten.  Another being when a classmate threw up all over the floor.

It was was my key to unlocking a door.

  1. What an awesome memory of kindergarten! Makes my teacher heart happy to know that connections are made even through the simple act of pointing to the letters while singing the alphabet. ♥️
